XXII TRIENNALE DI MILANO “A Piece of Sky” Sri Lankan Pavilion

The Sri Lankan Pavilion, jointly owned by Promo Lanka Pvt Ltd and Designed by PEIA Associati presents its own interpretation of the exhibition theme inspired by the UN Habitat program discussion and settlement of the marginalized.

A “Piece of Sky” offers a minimalist environment conducive to start productive activities and settlementsprotected from meteorological variables. The sky will be the protagonist in our global conversation on how to ensure human survival through conscious thought, design and execution. The simplicity and affordability of this solution, makes it versatile enabling it to be accessible to both government programs and private individuals. Individuals who are facing issues of minimum access to technology and security, can now devote themselves to improving their living conditions both socially and economically with this technology. A careful management of scarce resources can repair social and environmental misappropriations accumulated in the last century. The pavilion explores how this project is not only a technical proposal for rural areas, but also how it can relate cross contextually. Actions instigating urban regeneration takes on added value with cultural and creative initiatives executed throughout the the country.

Due to the extended exhibition period, it is integral that the Sri Lankan Pavilion maintains its dynamism. In order to achieve this, the pavilion curation will continuously evolve through out the six months. The fundamental issues related to the use of natural resources and sustainability will be linked to each monthly theme, due to Robonica’s hydroponic system, where in the Pavilion real plants will be harvested from the culture present in the installation. To engage and interpret the selected Pavilion theme, the co-curators Anjuli Flamer-Caldera and Natasha Thompson, asked the contributors/participants to address the question “What do you do or want to do with your piece of sky?”

Coca Cola Pavilion Second Life – Milan

The Coca-Cola Pavilion has been designed by PEIA from the beginning to have a Second Life, to be re-used as a basketball court at the end of the EXPO 2015. So the municipality of Milan signed the deal with Coca Cola.Once Expo closed, the wooden portals and the roof were dismantled and transported to a public Park of Milan to cover one basketball playground. The structure of the building built for Expo, won the award “Towards a Sustainable Expo” for its passive temperature control capabilities by waterfalls along the glass louvers facades. Now the pavilion structure allows to shade the space assuring natural ventilation in the summer and the usability even in case of rain or snow. A Led Lighting System inside synchronise the existing public lighting, which will let the visitors enjoy the newest generation of open basketball courts in all seasons and at all times, increasing the sense of overall security of the park.

Spot Light “Perla”

Low-luminance recessed fixture, available with square and round frame options or as a concealed feature.
Version with frame:
“Perla” is a recessed fixture with minimal design, and can be used for indoor architectural projects where light plays a fundamental role in the definition of spaces and where the use of a lighting product is the best way of enhancing this definition.
Concealed version:
This product offers extreme minimalism and versatility, as it does not have an outer frame. The structural element and the low-luminance reflector are made using aluminum. The frontal ring for halogen and metal halide lamps is made using PPS plastic, which is able to withstand high temperatures.
This frameless spot goal is to show just the light and nothing else.
New LED versions are already available.

Monte Ceneri street housing

The building represent a settlement model based on principle of functions stratification and the building is inspired from the vertical city theme, as Leonardo Da Vinci wrote in “Atlantic Code”, about such a modern approach.
For vertical city Leonardo did not mean high rise building, but a correct distribution of the functions in viability and commercial functions, raised garden courtyards far from the viability traffic, in the upper levels the residential wings.
The architecture of the building assumes a unitary character that harmonises all functions granting equivalent dignity without hierarchic distinction between residential and service facilities of spaces.
The façade design is composed of sliding  louvers at the first three floors and the composition alternates as empty and filled space in the residential areas, making the building mass lighter and more rarefied allowing the perception of filtered light in the night.
The target was to achieve a courtyard and only one vertical connection.  Aerial Bridges allow the distribution to every apartment entrance passing through the courtyard.
In the last two floors,“two villas” surrounded by terrace garden provide a gradual reduction of the massive volume of the “two blocks” unified by aerial bridges and car parking external basement.

Low Table “Marti”

Like geometric planes that meet and are superimposed, this is an exploration of the most elemental shape: the square.
The design choice of Corian as its material reduces width to a minimum, with full and empty spaces and wide surfaces that seem suspended in air.
A new LED panel (only 10 mm. invented and patented by Peia Associati) is hosted in the second level of the table. This technology could bring a real revolution in the design industry.
The RGB system transforms the white Corian in a perfect pure stage for infinite colours palette.

The Sustainable Village

The main idea of the project lies in the idea of a linear park that crosses longitudinally, the entire project area and in the urban synthesis provided by the architectonic variety of residential and public buildings;of the open spaces and green areas which host within them the same public buildings.
The primary architectonic typologies are; for the residences – “the courts” on ‘via C Rasario‘, public square with high rise residential complex, the line (duplex row houses + galleries) with the “big porch” of 200 meters along the park, ” towers “towards the west, while for the public buildings there are the “green waves” of the pavilions in the park, the circular “central plates” between the towers, the “light box” in the square.
Livability, self-sufficient energy , public welfare, the plurality of  necessary services to meet the needs of the local community and town, pre-fabrication, quality of buildings and public spaces are the objectives and instruments of a new settlement pattern, autonomous, but integrated in the urban and social village of Figino (Milan), indicating a satisfactory development aimed at promoting sustainable lifestyles and as a model of reference for redefining the edges “cutoff” of the metropolis between country side and the urban cover.

Floor Lamp “Ego”

A new product to respond to a need felt in design: that of emotional outdoor lighting.
A product born out of rigorous design and great personality. It is a cylindrical aluminum apparatus  of 220 mm diameter and two versions of height – 1800 mm in the upright standing version and 600 mm in the bollard version. The lamp can also be suspended or ceiling mounted.
U laser cutting machine with computer control checks allow to obtain a variety of geometrical shapes starting from the simple basic circle. At the bottom part there is an installation of an EYE LED module with 15 LEDs -powered by 350 mA beam at 8 ° gradient. Degree of protection IP65 complete with electronic power supply was inserted within the waterproofed case. At the top a circular closure allows the reflection of light downwards.

Spa Design

Torrenova Park City

The buildings along the street create shimmering silhouettes, communal gardens and within the boundaries of common high quality environment.
The buildings take on new freedoms in relation to the road edge, making continuity in the short trees with the largest green park, filtering the dynamic space between the more compact structure of the urban landscape to the east and west of the park.
The performance of the buildings moved to the interior of the block, the eave line is not constant, large terraces and balconies overlooking the open courtyards that give rhythm to the facades facing the park and the theme of the wall, the towers and the fragmentary to the urban fabric and to the road layout, give rise to a new urban environment comfortable and varied, which transformed into an abstract form and space scale of Rome’s historical background of the new park.
The green of the park and residential gardens spread over the face, it reaches and fills the shell, takes precedence over roads and parking needed.

Cultural Center Ikeda for Peace

The “Cascina Guardia di Sopra” is an ancient monumental agricultural complex that stands along an ancient road on the banks of an artificial stream. The stream is a part of the network of canals designed by “Leonardo da Vinci” for Milan.
The “Kaikan” Complex is realized by restoration of an important historic monumental structure together with the construction of a new building for the main convention centre inside a big garden along the water canal.
The convention centre works also as civic hall for the citizens and as temple for the local Buddhist Community. This contemporary building is covered by a second skin of golden colour copper finishing that assures thermal and electromagnetic insulation.
Internally wall and ceiling are timber finishing to host linear lights and to break the sound waves reverberations. The hall is for 1000 seats.
Furthermore, a small meeting hall tremples in new shape by wood, glass and Corten steel completing the lack of some ancient building of the complex, collapsed in the past.
The newly constructed biggest building is surrounded by a big water pond giving it a symbolic reference to a lotus petal or a big golden fish.

San Donato Townhall “Punto Comune”

The project has as a main focus the entrance hall and the public offices of the “Punto Comune”. The renovation of the town hall of San Donato first started in the 90’s, with a project directed by us, and the upgrade continued at the beginning of XXI century.

The aim was to design an area that would allow citizens to have direct access to all municipal services through public interface, simplified and accessible, facilitating the interaction between government and citizens.
